Douarnenez, its history

Douarnenez is well-known for its fish canning factories, but less so for its Gallic-Roman past. Nevertheless, the key player in both of its histories is the sardine. The “Chemin de la Sardine”, (The Sardine Path) has been designed to give you an insight into this completely unique past.

On the one hand, Douarnenez has a picturesque urban heritage consisting of old canning factories and houses belonging to factory workers, fishing families and sardine cannery workers. On the other hand, seaside villas, from the most impressive to the more modest, line the Tréboul Quarter.
